LOOKING BACK

Here’s a look at Josh Rabe’s athletic career. Rabe announced his retirement from baseball on Wednesday after a nine-year professional career:

1997 — Signs to play baseball at Quincy University after starring in football, basketball and baseball at Unity High School in Mendon.

1998 — A Central Illinois Collegiate League all-star after helping the Quincy Gems to a league-record 40-10 season and a CICL Tournament title.

1999 — Was the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-American after hitting .389 with 10 home runs and 56 RBI as a sophomore, helping QU reach the NCAA Tournament.

2000 — A second-team All-American after hitting .363 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI. Selected in the 11th round of the Major League Entry Draft by the Minnesota Twins.

2002 — Reached base in 67 consecutive games while playing for the Fort Myers Miracle of the Florida State League. Named a Florida State League all-star and earned a midseason promotion to Class AA New Britain.

2003 — Named to the Eastern League’s all-star team and earned a midseason promotion to Class AAA Rochester.

2006 — After spending parts of four seasons at Rochester, Rabe earned his first major league promotion, making his big-league debut as a pinch runner on July 17. Recorded his first big-league hit on July 18 (off Tampa Bay’s Edwin Jackson) and hit his first big-league home run on July 29 (off Detroit’s Nate Robertson).

2007 — Started the season at Rochester, but was called up by the Twins on April 9. Put on the disabled list with a shoulder injury on May 10. Had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on June 15. Released by the Twins in October.

2008
— Signed as a free agent with the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. Announced retirement on June 25 at age of 29 because of lingering back injury.
