Sprague's Kinderhook Lodge to host weekly speaker series on heritage

BARRY, Ill. -- A weekly speaker series focusing on the heritage of African-Americans in the Midwest continues Tuesday night at Sprague's Kinderhook Lodge.

Paul Mullins, an associate professor and chairman of the Department of Anthropology at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis, will present "Grassroots Politics and Archaeological Engagement along the Color Line" at 7 p.m. at the lodge located on Ill. 106 between Kinderhook and Barry.

He is the author of "Race and Affluence: An Archaeology of African America and Consumer Culture."

His presentation will target ways of analyzing the impacts of racism in American communities with a focus on his longterm archaeological projects concerning past African-American communities in Indianapolis.

The New Philadelphia Association, with cooperation from the lodge and the Illinois State Museum and generous support from the Illinois Humanities Council, sponsors the free seven-part speaker series. Upcoming presentations take place July 16 and 23 at the museum in Springfield.
