List pared to six for potential landmarks

The Quincy Preservation Commission was considering nominating up a dozen more Quincy buildings as local landmarks, but the preliminary list has since been whittled to six.
Tom Fentem, a city planner who provides staff support for the commission, said some property owners contacted in the past month indicated they weren't interested in pursuing landmark status at this time.
So the commission is pushing forward with obtaining historical and architectural information only for the remaining six buildings still under consideration.
Elton Trojniar, a summer intern working for the commission, will handle most of the research work. He is a Western Illinois University graduate student in geography.
Fentem said formal applications will be developed and presented to the commission later this summer. The proposed landmarks will be identified at that time.
The applications will likely be ready for the "preliminary review" process by September, he said.
Quincy currently has 91 local landmarks along with three local landmark districts -- the Brewery Area Local Historic District near 10th and Kentucky; the Park Place District east of 12th Street; and the Zwick Row House District in the 2400 block of College.
In other action, the commission agreed to submit a letter of support for a local effort to nominate Quincy for the National Trust's "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" honor.
The commission also welcomed two new members -- Amy Anderson and George Staerker. Jane Frederick joined the commission last month. These appointments by Mayor John Spring brings the commission up to its full complement of 13 voting members.
