Behind the wheel: Todd Reed
Todd Reed
Age: 39
Owner: Robbie Reed. "(Robbie) bought a new car this year and he let me drive the car he's been driving the past few years. ... The same car he won the championship in 2006. So it's a good car, we know that."
Class: Modified
Years racing: Rookie
Closest came to winning a modified race: Last week second place, behind his older brother Robbie. Before that, seventh place.
What was working last week? "The bottom line was the only thing working that I could figure out because no one was trying to go around me on the top. I was just hogging the bottom."
Racing resume: "I raced bicycles. I raced motorcycles for several years and then last year and the year before I raced one race each at Memphis (Mo.) in the "B"-Mods."
What's been the biggest transition, going to the open-wheeled four-wheel class?
"It's completely different. The driving styles don't even compare. The racing part is the part I like about it. I like both of them but it's totally different from racing motorcycles except for the fact that you have to push it a little sometimes. ... But I would think the car is a little more safer because you're strapped in and in a roll cage. Compared to the motorcycles where there's nothing there besides the ground and the trees."
Occupation: UPS driver/clerk
So do you spend most of your time in the office doing stuff? Or is it split?
I usually drive in the mornings and then I work in the warehouse at night. Which do you like more? The morning part (driving). What's your goal for your rookie season? "Try to finish all the races and hopefully finish in the top 10 in points -- if not better."
What got you into racing?
"My (older) brother (Robbie). Whatever he did when we were little, I just egged him on and did the same."
He drove a modified first and then did you see how much fun he was having with it?
"He asked me if I wanted to drive his old car in the spring and it took about two seconds to answer that question."
Do you have any pre-race superstitions?
"Not really. Just make sure my seatbelt's on good and tight and (Robbie and I) usually give each other the thumbs up before we go out on the track."
Favorite driver: I'd probably say Robbie.
Why's that?
"I'm not really big into NASCAR and all that. I never really was into car racing until Robbie started doing it. When we first started racing I kind of missed getting to watch him race because I wasn't doing very well and I was kind of getting frustrated and I really missed going to the races and getting to watch him. But it was still a lot more fun to be in the car than to watch. I got to watch him a little bit the other night. A little more than I wanted to."
